In order to become intentional about growing in Christ you must see what scripture says about growing in Christ and spiritual growth. There are a lot of Christians around the world who think that their only job is to just continue believing in Christ, but they fail to understand that if you believe in Christ you must follow him and his teachings. In order to live the way that Christ commands us to live we must grow, mature, be transformed, be renewed in our minds, be sanctified and imitate him.

Growing up in Christ is not a suggestion or recommendation to us, it is a commandment for our own well-being on Earth and in eternity. You and I were not born again through faith in Jesus Christ just to mention his name here and there, we are supposed to think, speak and act differently from now on!

Let’s take a look at some scriptures that point us toward growing in Christ:

“Until I come, devote yourself to the public reading of Scripture, to exhortation, to teaching.”
‭‭1 Timothy‬ ‭4:13‬ ‭ESV‬‬

“So put away all malice and all deceit and hypocrisy and envy and all slander. Like newborn infants, long for the pure spiritual milk, that by it you may grow up into salvation— if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is good.”
‭‭1 Peter‬ ‭2:1-3‬ ‭ESV‬‬

“Brothers, do not be children in your thinking. Be infants in evil, but in your thinking be mature.”
‭‭1 Corinthians‬ ‭14:20‬ ‭ESV‬‬

“And it is my prayer that your love may abound more and more, with knowledge and all discernment, so that you may approve what is excellent, and so be pure and blameless for the day of Christ, filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God.”
‭‭Philippians‬ ‭1:9-11‬ ‭ESV‬‬

“so that we may no longer be children, tossed to and fro by the waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by human cunning, by craftiness in deceitful schemes. Rather, speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ,”
‭‭Ephesians‬ ‭4:14-15‬ ‭ESV‬‬

“For this reason I bow my knees before the Father, from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named, that according to the riches of his glory he may grant you to be strengthened with power through his Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith—that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may have strength to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.”
‭‭Ephesians‬ ‭3:14-19‬ ‭ESV‬‬

“Therefore, as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in him, rooted and built up in him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving. See to it that no one takes you captive by philosophy and empty deceit, according to human tradition, according to the elemental spirits of the world, and not according to Christ.”
‭‭Colossians‬ ‭2:6-8‬ ‭ESV‬‬

“About this we have much to say, and it is hard to explain, since you have become dull of hearing. For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the basic principles of the oracles of God. You need milk, not solid food, for everyone who lives on milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, since he is a child. But solid food is for the mature, for those who have their powers of discernment trained by constant practice to distinguish good from evil.”
‭‭Hebrews‬ ‭5:11-14‬ ‭ESV‬‬

“Therefore let us leave the elementary doctrine of Christ and go on to maturity, not laying again a foundation of repentance from dead works and of faith toward God,”
‭‭Hebrews‬ ‭6:1‬ ‭ESV‬‬

“Practice these things, immerse yourself in them, so that all may see your progress. Keep a close watch on yourself and on the teaching. Persist in this, for by so doing you will save both yourself and your hearers.”
‭‭1 Timothy‬ ‭4:15-16‬ ‭ESV‬‬

“You therefore, beloved, knowing this beforehand, take care that you are not carried away with the error of lawless people and lose your own stability. But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be the glory both now and to the day of eternity. Amen.”
‭‭2 Peter‬ ‭3:17-18‬ ‭ESV‬‬

“And so, from the day we heard, we have not ceased to pray for you, asking that you may be filled with the knowledge of his will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding, so as to walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him: bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God; being strengthened with all power, according to his glorious might, for all endurance and patience with joy;”
‭‭Colossians‬ ‭1:9-11‬ ‭ESV‬‬

“Therefore put away all filthiness and rampant wickedness and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls. But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks intently at his natural face in a mirror. For he looks at himself and goes away and at once forgets what he was like. But the one who looks into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and perseveres, being no hearer who forgets but a doer who acts, he will be blessed in his doing. If anyone thinks he is religious and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his heart, this person’s religion is worthless.”
‭‭James‬ ‭1:21-26‬ ‭ESV‬‬

“Not that I have already obtained this or am already perfect, but I press on to make it my own, because Christ Jesus has made me his own. Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own. But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. Let those of us who are mature think this way, and if in anything you think otherwise, God will reveal that also to you. Only let us hold true to what we have attained. Brothers, join in imitating me, and keep your eyes on those who walk according to the example you have in us. For many, of whom I have often told you and now tell you even with tears, walk as enemies of the cross of Christ.”
‭‭Philippians‬ ‭3:12-18‬ ‭ESV‬‬
